COMMUNITY MINISTRIES
Calvary’s vision is to feed our neighbors physically, emotionally and spiritually. The following programs are part of that commitment:
Partnership with Our Place Waldorf
Through our partnership with Our Place Waldorf, we provide meals to those in need Friday and Sunday evenings.
You can volunteer to provide food or serve atone of these meals through Our Place Waldorf’s volunteer page.
ID Ministry
We are excitedly working to launch a new ID ministry near the start of 2020 to help those in need in our community secure important identification documents including birth certificates, social security cards and state identification cards. We are fortunate to be able to learn from and model our program on a very successful one in Washington D.C., operated by our sister congregation Foundry United Methodist Church.
To learn more about the need for and importance of such a ministry, check this 2017 article in the Washington Post describing Foundry’s ID ministry.

Calling on Christ Church to Make Thanksgiving Dinner Special for 30 Families
It’s time to help feed families at Thanksgiving, but with important changes due to the pandemic. FISH of Howard County is counting on Christ Church once again to provide the menu items for turkey or roast chicken dinners for 30 households. This year we’ll order the frozen poultry directly from suppliers; for non-perishables, one collection bin will be set up outside. For those who want to participate but remain totally hands off, you can donate toward the costs.
Here’s what you need to know:
▪The Thanksgiving Dinner Drive begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 and ends at noon on Sunday, Nov. 22. Those who attend worship services during that time period will find a bin in the narthex where you can drop off items on Nov. 8, Nov. 15, and Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
▪Those who wish to drop off items in the outdoor bin may do so curbside, near the entrance to the Parish Hall. You should not need to enter the building unless you encounter a problem with the bin, such as an overflow of items.
▪Needed non-perishables include: boxes of stuffing; jars or cartons of gravy; instant or fresh potatoes; canned or fresh yams; canned vegetables such as peas, carrots, green beans; applesauce; canned fruits such as peaches, pears, fruit cocktail; jars of pickles and olives; cans of cranberry sauce.
▪You are invited to bring dessert items, but, given their perishable nature, please do so only on the final collection day, Sunday, Nov. 22 until noon. Needed desserts include pies, pound cake, cookies, donuts, and brownies.
▪If you wish to donate toward the cost of the dinners, please designate Outreach/turkey dinner online in Realm, put a check in the Offering, or mail a check to the office with Outreach/turkey dinner in the memo line. We anticipate the cost of a frozen turkey to be approximately $20. The cost of side dishes for one family’s meal is about $26.00.
If we need particular items or have an oversupply of others, we will update everyone in the Gatherings email on Thursday, Nov. 19th.
Once again, Shahra and George Toth of the Outreach Commission are leading the drive, but if you have questions, email us at outreach@christchurchcolumbia.com. The goods will be assembled at the FISH pantry by its volunteers, who also handle deliveries to the families. Thanks to everyone for considering a donation of food or funds to help make this a special Thanksgiving holiday for our neighbors in need.
Outreach Invites Parishioners to a County Presentation at the Nov. 9th Zoom Meeting
Natalie Hall, who is the CAREAPP Engagement Coordinator with the Howard County Health Department, will give a presentation at the Outreach Commission meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9. Learn more about CAREAPP, which is a Howard County-wide initiative that assists residents with accessing social services and resources. The county is encouraging Christ Episcopal Church to join the CAREAPP network. Information on how to join the meeting by Zoom or by phone will be provided in the Church notices about online activities next Monday. For more information about CAREAPP powered by Healthify and participating community partners, visit www.hccareapp.org.
Springfield Hospital Christmas Gifts
We will once again be collecting Christmas gifts for our friends at Springfield Hospital. This has been a particularly difficult year for them, as they have been unable to have visits due to the pandemic. Though we haven’t been able to make our usual visits, we will be gathering gifts for them to bring a little Christmas Joy. If you would like to contribute, we have placed a large container in the Tower Room to accept your unwrapped donations, before December 14th. If that’s inconvenient, please contact Cathy Gold and we will find a way. heycathy@verizon.net or (410) 440-4178.
Baltimore International Seafarers' Center Donations
The Seafarers charity is again requesting donations from Christ Episcopal Church. The group is looking for warm hats for men, 2021 calendars, and copies of the following magazines: Time; People; Sports Illustrated; National Geographic. These items may be placed in the bin marked 'Seafarers' in the vestibule of New Brick. Thank you for your attention to this important community outreach. Please have your donations in by November 30th. To learn more, click here.

Since November 2015 Our Saviour has been hosting the Silver Spring satellite office of Samaritan Ministry, open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9-1. The congregation of Our Saviour supports Samaritan Ministry participants and staff both by providing space, volunteers and office facilities and through direct services including our food pantry and Thursday soup/sandwich ministry. Members of Our Saviour have also participated in Samaritan Ministry’s community walks and events to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty in our area and by supporting toiletry and toy drives and fundraisers for the work of Samaritan Ministry throughout the DC metropolitan area. At the annual gala in November 2019, Our Saviour was recognized by Samaritan Ministry as the year’s Outstanding Partner Church.

Soup to Go
Launched in November of 2015, the Soup to Go Ministry, which is also called “Sandwiches to Go” during the warmer months, was the brainchild of Ms. Olivette Guy-Williams. She, along with three volunteers – Victor Valatoro, Norman Nicolson and Jacqueline Skerritt – decided to meet every Thursday morning to prepare hot meals for the homeless people in the vicinity of the church. Initially, the effort was quite modest, serving a total of six (6) meals that were delivered to the patrons by foot, meeting them in places like their “homes” under the capital beltway. Learn more…
Food Pantry
The Food Pantry is another community outreach programme at COS. Congregants pick-up extra items as they do their grocery shopping, to stock the shelves at the food pantry. These item are made available, free of cost, to anyone in need who walks in. Patrons are allowed two items from each specialized shelf — vegetables; meats; cereal; juices, etc — no questions asked.
Community Partnerships
The COS partners with various community groups and organizations whose programmes are consistent with our policies and our values as Christians. Two such organizations are the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the Overeaters Anonymous (OA) here in Silver Spring, Maryland. These groups meet at our facilities five days and one day per week respectively.
Additionally, we support the activities of the Colesville Council of Community Congregations (C-4), particularly with regard to their annual Christmas toy drive.
We also partner with the African and Caribbean Immigration and Social Services Inc. (ACISS, Inc.) which offers counsel to immigrants. This professional service on immigrant affairs and social services can be had by visiting the church office during regular business hours from Tuesday through Friday.

Local Outreach
What Do We Do?
All Souls Congregational Church is proud to be constantly serving our local community. We are at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen serving meals to the homeless two times each month and we serve a monthly meal at the Greater Bangor Area Shelter; we host the Community Café of the Meals for ME program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year.
We joined with 8 other churches in the Bangor Area in 2013 to launch the Greater Bangor Street Pastor Initiative which sends teams out onto the downtown streets every Friday night to be in conversation with the people they encounter, helping them out in small ways if they can. All Souls has several members taking part as street pastors and as prayer pastors supporting these efforts. This program began in the United Kingdom and we are only the second Street Pastors Initiative in the United States.
We are a covenant partner with Habitat for Humanity, meaning that we send people, money, and prayers for each project.

In response to a lack of places for the homeless and those in need to find food and fellowship CSBC started a Sunday meal program in 2009. Five other churches have joined with us in providing meals on Sundays at noon in our church vestry. All are welcome, and many come for more than a meal - for fellowship and a place to bring prayer needs.
It is our pleasure as part of the Christian Community to offer food in Jesus' name. Usually there are between 60 and 80 who come each Sunday - we serve around 5,000 meals a year. We can always use helpers and supplies, just stop by.

Hunger is a real problem in McElderry Park, the neighborhood surrounding Amazing Grace. Many people lack access to regular meals and healthful, natural foods. Fortunately people is finding the best diets with cheap ingredients in sites like Askhealthnews.com/.
Since 2008, the Center for Grace-full Living has housed a food pantry that is open twice weekly. We are one of the few food pantries in Baltimore that are “client choice,” which allows our visitors to decide what they will take home to feed their families.
Through our partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, we can purchase food at a very low cost and provide a variety of items to our clients. We also regularly participate in the MD Food Bank’s produce drop program.21105477_1510844598954817_2857759117128374130_n

The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice
There is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship
There are three persons in the Godhead – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory
In the person of Jesus Christ, the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man
Our first parents were created in a state of innocence, but by their disobedience, they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall, all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God
