Arlington Temple UMC
703-525-6075
1835 N Nash St Arlington VA
True to our vision of being both a church and community center, Arlington Temple’s doors are open during business hours during the week. People come in these doors for lots of different reasons: to stop and pray during a break from work, to attend an AA meeting, or to get something to eat from our Fellowship Hall food basket.
The food in our food basket is supplied by a local organization and by food donations from church and community members. We are always in need of items that can be easily microwaved if necessary and eaten here, since many of our neighbors who partake don’t have their own home or kitchen: hearty soups, canned ravioli or spaghetti-os, instant mac and cheese, ramen noodles, cans of tuna, etc. For canned food, pull-tab lids are preferable. Remember us the next time you go shopping, or arrange a food drive at your school or workplace.
We offer multiple ways to serve our community and world together throughout the year. Each fifth Sunday of a month, we gather in the Fellowship Hall after worship for Fifth Sunday Service, where we might pack bag lunches for the nearby Arlington County Homeless Services Center, bag produce for the Arlington Food Assistance Center, put together backpacks with school supplies for local students living in affordable housing, or build health kits for refugees through the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Each December, we buy and wrap Christmas gifts for our unhoused community members so that they can face the winter with a new coat, sleeping bag, or whatever else might be on their list.
Our Arlington Temple Outreach team meets monthly on Tuesday evenings (dates TBD) and is always exploring and planning new ways for us to engage with and serve our surrounding Rosslyn community – come join the conversation!

HILDEGARDE’S FOOD PANTRY
Hildegarde’s Pantry is a ministry of the Cathedral Church of St. Mark and began in the kitchen of the Cathedral in the early 80s and then moved to the old parish hall. For five years the pantry was housed at the Jubilee Center on the corner of 200 E. 100 South until the new, expanded pantry facility was completed in 2006 on the grounds of the Cathedral. With the additional space and commercial freezers and refrigerators donated by the LDS Church Foundation, the pantry was one of the first in the state to move to a complete “choice” approach; visitors to the pantry indicate their choices for all food and personal care items from the shelves. We believe this promotes the dignity of all our guests.
Hildegarde’s has been feeding the hungry since the 1980s.
Hildegarde’s has been feeding the hungry since the 1980s.
The Pantry enjoys a rich history of Christian service that is reflected in its work and even its name. The Pantry is named after two women, both named Hildegarde, who were examples of such service. The first was St. Hildegarde of Bingen, a Medieval German healer, mystic, musician and theologian whom the original Pantry was named for. Then over 800 years later, the second was Hildegarde “Hilly” Pischel, a beloved parishioner of the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, who left an endowment for the pantry. In honor of Hilly and “e” was added to the name Hildegarde.
VOLUNTEERING
delivery-517x388.jpg
Volunteers are gladly welcome to participate in light work (stocking shelves, unloading boxes, sorting), data entry (very simple, one screen) and heavier work (unloading trucks, moving boxes).
The Pantry serves around 2000 households a month. Sometimes we serve many many more. We partner with local organizations like Utah Food Bank, Welfare Square, and Grocery Rescue to bring thousands of pounds of food to Utah residents in need each year.
We believe in taking the Church to the world in providing a vital outreach ministry. We also invite the world to St. Mark’s Cathedral by promoting a greater awareness of the needs of Utah residents who are without adequate food. Parishioners and community members volunteer thousands of hours and donate food items, personal care items, and fresh produce throughout the year as well as provide financial support to people in need.
HOW WE SPEND OUR FUNDING
The Pantry Director salary and a portion of the salary for the Deacon of St. Mark’s Cathedral are paid from the Hildegarde’s Pantry restricted accounts (monies donated specifically for the pantry). These positions play a critical role in organizing our ministry’s efforts to care for those in need.
In addition, funds are used for special food items, such as holiday foods (chickens and turkey hams), miscellaneous pantry supplies, gas for volunteer delivery five times per week, lunch one time per week for Monday volunteers who are at the pantry an average of 5 hours unloading trucks, breaking down pallets, stocking shelves, and refrigerator and freezer and cleanings.
HOURS OF OPERATION
The pantry is currently only open for customers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from
11:00-1:30 and Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m.
We reserve the right to close the pantry earlier than the posted time if the lobby is full at the posted closing time. Processing and serving those people may take volunteers and staff an extra 30-45 minutes.
FOOD BOX SIGN-UP
We are now offering a new option for families that would like to pick up a pre-made box of food, rather than wait in line at the pantry. If you would like to sign up for a food box, click on the button below to fill out the form. Note that food box pick-up is limited to twice a month, just like in-person visits.
SIGN UP FOR YOUR FOOD BOX!
After you have signed up for your box using the linked form, come to the WEST doors of the pantry on your chosen day for pick-up. Only one family member needs to come to pick up the food, but ID must be provided for every family member included in the order. For example, if you sign up for a family of 6, you will need 6 IDs.
DELIVERIES
Deliveries are made on Monday and where volunteers clean, unload, sort and stock the pantry. We are not open to the public this day.
HOLIDAY SEASON
NOVEMBER & DECEMBER
Holiday food in November and December requires pre-registration. Dates vary by year. These dates and all holiday closures are posted at the beginning of each month at the pantry.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PATRONS
Guests of the Food Pantry must meet the following requirements.
Only 2 visits per household per month;
Identification is required for all household members on every visit (copies are OK)
Adult identification: must be a current picture ID (does not have to be from Utah)
Children under 17: identification may be Social Security Card, Medicaid card, passport, school ID or any other document showing relationship to parent(s). Does not have to have a picture.
In an effort to promote good stewardship of the environment, visitors are given an “extra choice” item if they bring in a reusable bag. We believe in caring for people and the Earth.

During this time of social distancing the pantry service has been changed to a drive through model with no personal contact between volunteers and clients. This year an average of 77 families with over 350 family members have been served each week. Most of the families are working hard to meet the basic cost of living in this difficult time. The Food Pantry often helps people to stretch their supplies just enough to help them get through the month on very limited incomes.

AGAPE MEAL
Since 1995, Broadway’s neighborhood Agape Meal has provided worship and fellowship at a family-style meal for homeless neighbors, church members, and community volunteers. This meal isn’t just about feeding the hungry – it’s about creating time and space for us to build relationships that celebrate the gifts of all of our neighbors. Each week, the Agape Meal serves about 100 guests.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we have temporarily suspended the worship service and sharing the meal together around the table. Guests are still welcomed each week and receive hot, to-go meals every Thursday night from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

SOUP KITCHEN AT ST JOHN'S
DSC 0222
St. John’s Soup Kitchen provides vital nutrition for people who are homeless, precariously housed, just passing through town, or part of the growing numbers of the working poor. Twice each week, the Midtown/Downtown community is invited to break bread at St. John’s and share from God’s bounty, where there is more than enough to go around. Rhodes College students, as ambassadors of the servant leadership model of their institution, prepare and serve food on Tuesday afternoons, while Saturday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 belong to St. John’s members, various Memphis-area churches, and community groups.
As a means of grace for our community, St. John’s Soup Kitchen food is served to whoever comes, without questions or prerequisites. For hundreds of guests each week, it’s the answer to a prayer for daily bread served in an environment where hospitality is the gospel and safety is the rule.
Groups have already been scheduled for cooking and serving the meals during each week of the year, but there are a number of ways you or your group can help us make our Saturday evening meal a warm, loving, and hospitable experience for St. John's soup kitchen guests. Please consider the opportunities below and contact Annie for more information.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
DSC 0228
Fresh fruit as a take-away: There's never a soup kitchen meal that couldn't be enhanced by the offering of an apple, banana, or orange for guests to take with them as they depart. 125 pieces are recommended, and donors are welcome to either drop of their donation at 3:30 pm on a Saturday, or plan to hand them out as guests depart the soup kitchen.
Dessert: Who doesn't love cookies and brownies? Typical soup kitchen meals do not include dessert, but if you or your group wish to bake cookies, brownies, cupcakes or something else, it would be greatly appreciated by our guests. 125 pieces recommended.
Hygiene Packs: Your group can assemble hygiene packs to distribute to guests, or purchase pre-assembled hygiene bags for $1 each from St. John's to distribute.
Contribute Financially: Donate to our soup kitchen through our online giving page.

There are many children in our community that receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program.
For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend?
CCNE is partnering with the Richland 2 School District and Spring Valley High School to identify these kids in our area and get them the food they need for the weekend.
