W.I. SMITH BENEVOLENCE COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FUND

FUMC collects offerings year round to offer assistance to those who need help with paying utility bills, gas, and other immediate needs on a case by case basis. Our Benevolence Community Assistance Fund stays depleted, and we rarely have enough money to meet all the needs. Consider making a donation on a regular basis so that we can help those needing an extra hand to get back on their feet.

SNACK BAG MINISTRY

As many as 15 people will likely come by our church every day needing assistance, food, or transportation. Consider volunteering to help provide brown bag meals with non-perishable food items when needed. Savvy shoppers and brown bag packers are needed.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE

Volunteers serve and work with pastors and other members of FUMC in caring for those in our congregation. Opportunities include: visiting people in hospitals or in times of need, caring for our homebound, providing meals for new parents and/or bereaved families & individuals, and simply making a difference in a person’s life by showing care and concern.

FEED MY SHEEP

This local community kitchen has served the hungry since 1974. Volunteers are needed to operate the serving line and deliver meals along six established routes Monday-Friday.

Our church provides sack lunches to the hungry and/or homeless in the parking lot at Feed My Sheep on the third Sunday of every month. Volunteers are needed to purchase food, pack, and dispense sack lunches until either the line or packed lunches run out.

The Image of God in Every Person
Like you, we at Stewpot have watched the events of the past weeks unfold with great heartache.

The senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, and Rayshard Brooks have laid bare yet again the violence our Black sisters and brothers too often experience at the hands of America’s police and justice systems.

It’s important in these days for you to know, and for us to say, that Stewpot Community Services stands against all that dehumanizes and degrades, and this includes racism in all its forms.

At Stewpot, we witness every day the impact that systemic racism has wreaked on human lives. We minister to the needs of people who have historically had less access to healthcare, quality education, affordable housing and good job opportunities. To the extent that we can, Stewpot stands in the gap those inequalities have created.

But we know that we cannot address these injustices alone. It takes all of us working together toward systemic solutions for these systemic problems.

At its best, Stewpot is a place that brings people together across the divides that often separate us. That’s because our common purpose – to love and serve our neighbors in need – helps us see beyond the labels we give and the labels we wear. And in our experience, prejudices cannot long survive meeting and getting to know one another.

In their most recent communication, the HOPE Policy Institute wrote, “We’re grieving, and we’re ready for justice.” We join them, and all who are weighed down by grief and oppression, in calling for change. Meanwhile, we will remain steadfast in our contribution to the work: honoring and loving the image of God in every person we meet. And giving you the chance to do the same.

*Sponsor a Family 2020: Sponsor A Family-Drive is still going on to purchase gift cards for needy families. Please get your donation in of gift cards or cash by November 8th so we can forward to Sponsor a Family. As reported earlier, this years format will be different. It will be converted to gift cards ONLY. The families being supported are the working poor who have already lost jobs or housing and are truly struggling. Sponsor a Family’s goal this year in to raise $300,000. This goal would allow us to provide $80 in gift cards per person so the families can apportion their spending between food, clothing, household goods & toys. With this goal, they can serve the same number of clients as last year. Please note: 100% of your donation goes directly to a family and is tax deductible.

There are two ways you can help:

Make a cash donation to FOG and we will pool our resources and send to sponsor a family or
Make a donation of gift cards. They are focusing on Target, Walmart, Aldi & Cub to provide maximum value and flexibility in shopping options.
Please turn in your checks or gift cards to the office by November 8th so we can get them in to Sponsor a Family,

Let’s join together to make a difference.
November Food Shelf: Thank you to all who contributed to October collection to NHCC. In November we will be collecting for CEAP. They are continuing to receive record requests for help with food. Any nonperishable food items are needed. If you don’t like to shop you can give a cash donation which we will forward.
Sheridan Story: For the past 2 years year we joined with the Sheridan Story to provide backpacks of food for 100+ students at Edinbrook Elementary (school just to the north of FOG) to take home each weekend. The Sheridan Story packs the food and delivers it to the school, school staff identifies which families could use help with extra food on the weekends, and FOG volunteers deliver the food to student’s lockers on Friday afternoons. The school staff, students, & their families were very appreciative of this program.

The social ministry Committee would like to continue this project for the upcoming school year but we need your help. The cost to sponsor one child for the school year is $215. We would like to sponsor as many children as we can. Another local business will also be contributing

Faith Lutheran Church

2740 Fuller Avenue NE
Grand Rapids, MI 49505

Communion Visitation Team—We are dedicated to maintaining our relationships with those members of our church who are no longer able to come and worship with us. Members of our Communion Visitation Team receive training and support as they take communion to those of our members who are no longer able to come to us for worship and fellowship.

Samaritas Senior Living Communion and Fellowship—A good number of our members now live on the Samaritas Senior Living Campus, and we love gathering with them on the third Thursday of each month (at 3:30) to share in an informal Communion service followed by refreshments and a time of casual fellowship. This ministry has really blossomed over the past seven years! We’re so pleased that our friends at Samaritas have invited their friends to come and join them for this time.

IMG_5928.JPG
Quilting—Each week (during the school year) a group of our members gather to share lunch and put together quilts. Many of the finished quilts decorate our sanctuary before being given away to hospitals, new born babies, and local (as well as distant) missions. They are artistic expressions of the gifts that our members have, lovingly made, and freely shared for those in need.

Knitting--Our Faithful Knitters continue a wonderful ministry of knitting or crocheting prayer shawls and baby blankets. These are distributed to places like Alpha Women's Center, Michigan Veterans Facility, Ronald McDonald House, Kent County Health Department and Booth Family Center.

Samaritans Purse—This congregation participates in Operation Christmas Child by gathering small gifts for children around the world. Shoeboxes are filled with gifts appropriate for boys and girls in different age ranges. The boxes are then gathered and delivered to those in need... often in far away places.

Angel Tree—During Advent we have an Angel Tree in the Narthex (Lobby) on which you will find labels that identify a person by age and gender. Members of our congregation are encouraged to take a label and shop for a gift that would be appropriate for this person. These gifts are then gathered and distributed throughout the community.

Mitten Tree—The mitten tree reminds us not to let anyone go to school or work during the cold winter months without something to keep their hands and head warm. Gloves, mittens and hats of various styles and sizes are donated through this project to those in need in our community and around the state.

Holiday Food Baskets—Before Christmas our congregation gathers food and donates money to fill food baskets for families in need in our neighborhoods. Then we gather as a community, young and old, to assemble the food—hams and stuffing and cranberries, and a variety of other staples—in boxes in time for a very special Holiday meal. in 2018, we assembled and distributed over fifty boxes!

Latvia, Honduras, and Papua, New Guinea—These our companion churches around the globe. We strive to remember and support them through prayer and financial offerings as they share in the mission of Christ with us in their contexts and among the people in their communities.

Samaritas—This expression of our church reaches out to the elderly, refugees, and children in need of Foster Care around our state. We are excited by the work they do as they express God’s love through concrete acts of compassion and we strive to support this organization through volunteer participation in their work and financial support of their programs.

North West Lower Michigan Synod and ELCA—The people of Faith Lutheran Church support the ongoing missions of our Synod and the national ELCA organizations. The funds we send to these larger expressions of our body provide for higher education settings (Lutheran Colleges and Seminaries), assistance for new churches, and coordinated efforts for providing services to those in need.

Special Appeals and Special Projects—Along with these missions we also remain open and attentive to the needs of those in our neighborhoods, and around our world, who are in need. In the last few years, the people of Faith have responded with generosity to the victims of floods, earthquakes, storms, and violence. We have donated to the health and welfare of others through the Heifer Project, malaria prevention and protection campaigns, clean and accessible water projects, and Lutheran World relief.

North End Community Ministry (NECM) - Provides services for those in need in this community. NECM hosts a food pantry open to the community. Some of the resources include a personal care pantry, food pantry, a supper house - offering warms meals on Tuesday & Thursdays- educational classes, infant and toy closet, back to school resources & so much more! www.necmgr.org

Walk for Good Food 2018.jpg
IMG_1240 (1).JPG
Funeral Luncheons - This dedicated group gathers to provide luncheons for those who are grieving following funerals or memorial service. Foods are purchased and brought to the church, where these members prepare the luncheon, host the gathering, and clean up after the event. These luncheons are provided for only the costs of foods purchased (often desserts and other items are donated as well). If the family wishes to make a donation to the Women of Faith, they may do so and these monies are often used to support other missions of this body.

Community Garden—The Community Garden of this church is open to members of the congregation as well as our neighbors who simply wish to have a little space for their own gardening. Often extra vegetables are donated to others.

Pizza and Movie Nights—This is a small gathering that comes together during the winter months in the Fellowship Hall. They are simply there to provide a time of fellowship for the community. We have purchased a license that allows us to show these movies without infringing on copyright laws.

Access Walk for Good Food—Formerly called “the Hunger Walk,” our congregation continues to collect donations and participate in this event that educates the public about our local food needs and assists families and individuals as it raises money to provide good foods for our community members.

Band Concert, Ice Cream Social & Back to School Bash—This has become an annual event in which the very talented members of our Praise Band put together a concert featuring music that ranges from rock and pop to blues, show tunes, and whatever they choose to bless us with. Donations received at this event are donated to the NECM Back to School Program which purchases book bags and other school supplies for needy children in our neighborhood.

God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday—On this Sunday we put our faith into action as we participate in a project specifically tailored for this community. Last year we assembled “Bedtime-Bags.” Items such as toothbrushes, soap, wash cloths, bedtime books, and stuffed toys were collected during the summer. The sewing group from this church then sewed bags to hold these items, and on the designated Sunday we gathered following our worship service to put items in the bags which were then distributed to those in need.

Homeless Ministry
There are regular opportunities to get to know our neighbors on the street, through our partner ministries common cathedral and The Outdoor Church of Cambridge.

Every fourth Saturday of the month, a small group of us goes through Central and Harvard Squares in Cambridge to meet our unhoused neighbors, listen to their stories, and offer small assistance through food and supplies.

Several times a year, on an ad hoc basis, we also organize outings or events to serve the community in other ways. So far, we have had art shows, ice cream socials, and Easter Sunday worship on the street.

If you want to know more or are interested in joining one of our outings or events, please contact us at info@faithcambridge.org.

Sharing our space with the wider community
God has given us the gift of this building so that we can put it to work for God’s purpose. We love to make it available to the community for meetings, concerts, and community events.

If you have an idea about how this church can serve the community, please contact us at info@faithcambridge.org.

Our building is home to three other congregations besides Faith Lutheran Church. Sometimes the congregations worship together, share programs, and have meals together. All help clean up the building and the yard in the spring and fall. The congregations are:

Food Benevolence
The Food Benevolence Program began in the mid 1980s and has been serving the community ever since. The Food Benevolence Team strives to meet the needs of disadvantaged families in Southern Maryland by distributing food to screened applicants on Wednesday mornings.

Food recipients range from senior citizens whose only income is a meager social security pension to families of ten or twelve. We are presently serving about 120 families per month.

Additionally, we distribute over 200 Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets each year. Each basket includes turkey, potatoes, yams, rolls, cranberry sauce, fruits, vegetables, cookies, candy, etc. As an added touch, our church youth and children purchase and include various types of hygiene products for the baskets.

Food Distribution:
Food is distributed weekly from the pantry behind the church on Wednesdays, 9:30AM - 11:45PM

Volunteers:
Though food is distributed for less than three hours per week, there are many behind-the-scenes tasks such as acquiring, loading, transporting, stocking, packing and downloading the food for distribution. We are always looking for new volunteers, both men and women, to dedicate some time to this extremely successful and popular ministry. For more information on volunteering some time, please contact Harry Arnold.
